Student data policy

Last updated October 2026

This page is for students, parents and guardians. It lists the rules that protect a student's information. The rules are enforced in the database, so they apply to every organization the same way.

1. Your record stays with your organization

Your CBO or school keeps your record. A university can never read it. Other CBOs and schools cannot read it either.

2. Being listed is your choice

Your CBO can list you in a pool that universities search only after consent is recorded. If you are 18 or older, you give it. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian gives it. Staff cannot give it for you.

3. What a university sees before you say yes

A handle in place of your name, your graduation year, grade, state, student types, interests, GPA band and the name of your organization. Nothing else. A search that matches fewer than 10 students shows no results.

4. How your identity is released

  • A university asks for more information about a profile.
  • Your CBO approves or declines. If it declines, it stops there.
  • You decide, or your guardian decides if you are a minor.
  • Only then can the university read your profile.

5. Taking it back

You can revoke a release at any time and the university loses access at once. Every release also expires after 12 months. Every time a university reads a released profile, the read is recorded.

6. What is never asked for

  • Race, ethnicity, nationality, ancestry, immigration status, disability or justice involvement.
  • FAFSA forms, tax returns or financial aid documents.

7. Age

No one under 13 can have an account.

8. No one is paid for introducing you

Organizations pay a flat yearly membership. There is no fee per referral, per application or per enrollment. Your data is not sold and is not used for ads.
